“The Ring of Fire”

Remember: You should verify that your inflatable is constructed of a material that is not readily flammable.

Inflatable amusement devices that are licensed for public use must be made of a material with an acceptable flame spread rating that has been tested by an approved method.

If you would like to know whether your device is made of vinyl that is flame retardant, check the label. You can also refer to the manufacturer‘s website or contact them directly.

Blowers and Extension Cords

The blowers or fans supplied with inflatable devices are like any other electrical device in Canada and they must be approved for use. The most commonly recognized symbols are CSA or ULC. For a complete list of approved symbols, you can visit the Electrical Safety Authority‘s website at http://www.esasafe.com/GeneralPublic/epa_002B.php?s=19.

Generally, devices require one or two units per device at one to one and a half hp. The blowers must be set up in a dry area, away from water accumulation or sources of moisture. The blowers should be guarded to prevent access to moving parts, and kept away from children. The cord should be in good repair and free of nicks or splices.

Remember, your “garden variety” extension cord is not acceptable for use with these blowers. Extensions cords, where permitted, should be checked to ensure that they are, at a minimum:

  • Approved for outdoor use
  • Have GFI protection
  • Are not longer than 50 feet
  • All 3 prongs are present
  • Are rated for the amperage required
